Vacation photo #5
Whale watching in Puget Sound - Orca Pod J Killer Whales.
On Wednesday Banana and I went on a whale watching expedition. We boarded the Glacier Spirit in Port Townsend cruised into the Puget Sound. The whales were up near Vancouver, so rather than chasing them down, the captain opteded to put into port at Friday Harbor a bit early for lunch, and allow the whales to swim down toward us. They have regular routes they swim around the San Juan island as they search for food (mostly salmon from what were told). Friday Harbor is a quaint town, with really expensive real estate/cost of living. Mid afternoon we were able to catch up to the Orca Pod (Pod J - they were filmed in Free Willy). We only saw 8-10 different whales, among them were 2 baby whales. It's tough to catch good photos of whales. Especially when they aren't breeching. But I did manage to get a couple of pretty good shots inspite of the boat rocking, people in the way, the whales moving pretty quickly and my relative inexperience in photo taking (especially with my new camera).
On Tuesday I had the best sandwich I have ever had. I think I might make a special post just about this sandwich. Wednesday night I had some delightful bacon wrapped sea scallops at Pete's Resturant in down town Port Townsend. These scallops were some of the best food I have ever had, and were only $15. These would be $40 in downtown Seattle. I also captured some great photos of a rainbow over the bay from Pete's entryway.
