Waseca County Minnesota - Demographics

Below are some data nuggets for Waseca County, MN where First Congregational Church is located. These are based off of the 2000 Census, so there will be some variation that isn't reflected. It will still give a good general overview of the area I will be ministering in in the years to come.

A few thoughts - Ethnically, it is very white. I have more ethnic diversity within a 3 block radius of my current house in East St. Paul than in the whole county. A very low rate of rental - 20%. A low rate of unemployment - 2.5%. A low poverty rate - 6.5% living below the poverty rate.

Any reader thoughts?

Hi Chris,

This is a long answer to your request for thoughts - but that is my nature;-)

I serve on the city council in Waseca and was involved with the regional development group for the nine county area (region 9 - rndc.org). Region 9 had a non-profit arm that I served on and we met with a group regarding building philanthropy in the area - one of the things that they were startled by was the "whiteness" of the area. Basically pn a per capita basis this is one of the "whitest" areas in the country. As with any statistical snapshot it only tells a portion of the tale.

Waseca (and the surrounding area) has seen some fluctuations of immigrant populations that have changed our makeup a fair amount - both Somali and Latino. I moved to Waseca from Rochester and can say that this community has welcomed and integrated new populations (and even new individuals) far better than Rochester did.

This is my first visit to your blog, I hope to return often.

Matt
